Campfire Recipes: Easy Steak Kabobs
Camping is all about spending time with family, nature, relaxing, and of course food! There are so many ways you can cook while camping. You can bring a grill and cook on that. You can fire up the cook top and oven inside your camper, or you can cook over the campfire that you're already having! We love cooking over the fire while camping. There is nothing that beats the fire roasted flavor while sitting outside at your campsite!
The first recipe of our Campfire Recipes Series is for Easy Steak Kabobs! My friend and I were on a road trip in my motorhome travelling from New York to Florida and we decided to make a few day stop in Nashville, Tennessee. The first couple days we spent exploring Downtown and checking out artists bars on Broadway. For our final day, we wanted a relaxing day at the campsite. We took an Uber to the local Kroger and picked up our supplies for dinner. The main question we asked ourselves was "what would be fun and easy to cook over the campfire?" We landed on steak kabobs!
Our shopping list consisted of; steak, bell peppers, onion, and Montreal steak seasoning. Easy enough right? The only additional things you might need are tomatoes, potatoes, or whatever else you like on your kabobs that I didn't mention and bamboo skewers. We have metal skewers in our camper so those weren't on our list. For the steak, you can buy yourself a nice sirloin roast, New York strip steak, or if you want to save yourself from cutting; stew beef will do just fine! If you choose the sirloin roast or strip steak, first thing you'll do is cut the steak into cubes. Next, cut your bell pepper into square pieces and do the same with your onion.
Next, you'll want to spread out your cubed steak and sprinkle the Montreal steak seasoning over it. Then stir the cubes up to get an even seasoning base across all of your steak. Now, it's time to assemble! Take your skewer and put on the steak, onion and peppers in whatever order you prefer. While you're prepping the kabobs, be sure to have your fire started. You want some hot coals to be cooking over. After an hour or two of the fire burning is prime cooking time! I like to let the fire simmer down and then shift the flame to the side of the pit, so I have room to cook over the coals and low flames.

You might be thinking, well I have my kabobs, I have my fire but what am I cooking on? A lot of campgrounds have fire pits with grates for cooking but I always carry my cast iron tripod grill in my camper. This is designed for campfire cooking and is an amazing accessory to have while camping! Time to put your kabobs over the fire. Cook time will vary based on how you like your steak and how hot your fire is but here us a general guide:
Rare (125°F): 6–8 minutes
Medium-Rare (130–135°F): 7–10 minutes
Medium (140–145°F): 8–12 minutes
Medium-Well (150°F): 10–14 minutes
Well-Done (160°F+): 12–16 minutes

Personally, I like medium steak so we cooked our kabobs for about 10 minutes. You want to be sure to rotate the skewers every 2 minutes or so to ensure the meat is cooked evenly. Once you take your kabobs off the grill, be sure to let your kabobs rest for about 5 minutes. After that rest period, they'll be ready to enjoy!
